Australia’s Youth Allowance assists students and job seekers aged 16-24 with living expenses through fortnightly payments. As of January 2025, modified income and asset evaluations will be implemented, making sure that the system continues to be focused on the people who truly need assistance. Here’s a summary of the most important parts: eligibility, payment schedule, and the potential amounts of payment.
Who is Eligible for Youth Allowance?
Youth Allowance is available to:
Students studying full-time (including Australian apprentices)
Residents of Australia who are 16 to 24 years old and are enrolled in a course (study or vocational training)
Residents of Australia who are between 18 to 24 years of age looking for work or taking part in some approved activities.
Test Type | Threshold for Singles | Impact on Payment |
---|---|---|
Parental Income | $53,000 annual free area | Payment reduces by 20¢ for each $1 above limit |
Student Assets | $6,500 free area | Assets over free area reduce payment |
Independent Income | $451 per fortnight free area | Income above reduces payment dollar-for-dollar |
Applicants are required to comply with the residency rules and be enrolled in at least half-time study or approved training. Further, income and asset limits determine payment scale: single students whose parents’ income is under the free area (currently at $53,000 per annum) are given the maximum allowance. Those above the threshold will have a gradual reduction in their payment.
