In response to growing inflation and its impact on household incomes across South Africa, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has taken measures to aid the burden for millions of grant recipients. Starting from the 1st of August 2025, critical social grants will receive substantial increases, providing essential support for the elderly, people with disabilities, and other needy families.
Beneficiaries of the old age grant and the disability grant will be receiving an extra R90. For those older than 75 years, the grant increases to R2200 while for those younger than 75, it will be R2180. Disability and care dependency grants will be increased to R2180 and the war veteran grant will be R2200. The SRD grant will be increased to R370 from R350. While the increases may appear small, they do indicate the government’s efforts to attend to those in the low-income bracket and their growing economic challenges.
Incremental Support for Families and Children
To alleviate cost-of-living burdens on families, the child support grant will increase by R20, bringing the monthly total to R530. The additional R3.2 billion set aside for social grants in August is further evidence the government is responding to ongoing socio-economic pressures. These increases also seem to be politically motivated in light of the looming general elections, serving to enhance public perception of 2026 welfare efforts.
Eligibility and Application Remain Unchanged
Grant eligibility criteria remain unchanged: applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents of a certain age, disabled, and must provide the required certified documentation. Applications are still processed online through the SASSA portal, in-person at local SASSA offices, or via a self-service kiosk. Beneficiaries with approved claims are paid by direct deposit or at designated local cash outpoints.

Once grant beneficiaries receive their notifications, they are advised to check their grant status on the SASSA website and confirm that their banking information is accurate and current. Those with questions or who wish to submit supporting documents can go to any SASSA service center. Community organizations and advocacy groups are also expanding their efforts to help applicants, stressing the need for prompt renewals to mitigate payment interruptions. While South Africa is grappling with the headwinds of economic challenges, the grant increases in August provide welcome relief, even though in small increments.
